more from Tavua
Posted November 11th
In this post we’re continuing with our recent donations of educational materials up in Tavua, Rakiraki & Ba, on the northern side of Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. First though, here’s a photo from our recent meeting with government minister for social welfare, Dr Jiko Luveni. Also in the picture are our friends & charity workers Peter & Margaret Long who brought a lot of our current stock of educational materials from England. The wall map on the right shows the Fiji islands, many of them covered with little green flags: all villages where Dr Jiko’s ministry has donated much-needed sewing machines to women’s groups.
Back to Tavua, a nice little town with a population of about 3000. Last time we donated books in the primary school so this time we concentrated on kindergartens & the secondary school. Many thanks to Rachel & Oli, in the photo below, who drove us around to all the different institutions that we planned to visit.
We’ll finish off with another ‘Fiji far out fact’! It seems like all the villages along the road on the main islands start & finish with signposts like these ones: an enlarged version of clubs that used to be used by Fijian warriors on hunting expeditions or in warfare! Thankfully things have calmed down a lot since those days…..
