from Grand Cayman…
from Grand Cayman!
posted May 30th
Greetings from Grand Cayman where we’ve now spent 2 weeks. The island has a population of only 55,000 but is the most developed Caribbean island that we’ve seen up until now. It’s so developed that it’s sometimes hard to tell that one is still in the Caribbean, as the highways & shopping centres seem more like Florida! The huge population of expats adds to this impression….
Fortunately, there is still a ‘local side’ of the island that we come across while hitch hiking and visiting schools & areas outside of the tourist circuit. Caymanians are really wonderful people, but we just wish there were more of them & less of some of the others! (Expats, not including tourists, make up 44% of the population).
Prayer requests:
1) We’ll be visiting the 2 other islands in the Caymans group, (Cayman Brac & Little Cayman), from June 14th to 22nd & at the time of writing have zero contacts & zero places to stay! Please pray for open doors.
2) Please also pray for open doors to conduct our programs in the government schools. It’s been difficult so far to get the all-important letter of authorization as first of all, our emails didn’t get through to the right person, & then we arrived during election week….. although we visited the Ministry of Education almost as soon as we stepped off the plane, we quickly found out that election week eclipses everything else! After election week, we succeeded in making email contact with the right person in government, but due to the change of political party in power, it’s taking a little more time for the dust to settle! Please pray for a breakthrough that we can meet the chief officer & obtain permission to visit government schools.
