With our website, newsletters & Pacific Outreach centre a bit more up to date than when we first arrived back in Fiji one month ago, we decided it was time to start on diminishing our large stock of boxes of educational supplies.
We decided to follow up on an invitation we received last year to bring library books & textbooks to Chevalier Vocational Training Centre. Situated some 20 kms outside of Suva, the centre was set up a few years ago by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) Catholic order in order to help students that dropped out of the normal educational system or that were not so academically inclined in the first place! There are useful hands-on courses in mechanics & welding, among other subjects, so that students can start their adult life with a practical skill.
The centre has over 50 boarders & all our required to also help maintain the farm that grows or produces a lot of the food they eat. The large property became a bit run down in recent years but now has a new & very dynamic principal that wants to greatly improve the centre in all areas–as evidenced by carpentry & painting projects going on all around us during our visit! It seemed like a good time to donate 4 boxes of library & text books, along with toothpaste & stationery…..
