school distribution progress
posted Oct 22nd
We recently went through all our boxes of books (that are taking up a lot of place all around our house!) & found that most of the stock we have at the moment is for secondary schools. We therefore met with the director of secondary education, Mr Jay Narayan, & asked him if he could kindly give us a list of the more needy schools under his jurisdiction. He told us that the more needy ones are basically any beyond Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu….so that’s basically Vanua Levu & Taveuni, plus individual schools on about 10 other islands.
We reckon we have enough to give 5 boxes each to 15 of these schools & are waiting for an open door to leave Suva & go visit them. It will probably be a 2-week trip so we need someone to look after the house for this time period.
In the meantime, Mr Narayan told us about a high school in the Suva area that mainly caters to children from disadvantaged backgrounds & that would be in need of books. After arranging a suitable day, he drove us there & we had a good time presenting the books to the principal, staff & students. Reactions were very good & we won’t forget one girl in particular who was delighted that several works of Shakespeare were included!
In fact the books were on all subjects & will serve to increase the size of the school library which was previously rather limited. Like the director said though, the bigger need is far away from Suva so please pray we can get to these schools in the coming weeks……
