Happy new year! Here in Suva, there’s a wonderful organization called Prisoners’ Children that we’ve worked with a few times in the past. They basically try to help the families of prisoners, as a lot of them are from low income backgrounds to begin with, & after the main bread winner of the family ends up in prison, they’re even worse off. In Fiji there’s almost no system of social welfare & so it’s the children in such situations that suffer the most.
Every year Prisoners’ Children does street collections in order to raise money to have a Christmas feast for all the families that they’re assisting, & at the same time they try to give a Christmas present to every child. Whenever we have large stocks of clothes or children’s educational materials, we join up with Prisoners’ Children & take part in the present giving.
This Christmas we were able to give bags of clothes (donated by Value City) to 30 families, along with toothpaste, children’s coloring books & crayons. Helping us with the distribution were Shelly, (Sue’s daughter that’s visiting from France), and Sam (a dedicated volunteer from Australia). While it was a joy for the families to receive these items, perhaps it was an even greater joy for us to give them…..
