After arriving in Suva, they made themselves available, both for sorting the boxes of books, & then coming with us to help distribute them.
Around the same time, my dentist (who either donates or gives a reduced price for all our dental work), asked if we could possibly make a visit to his old primary school to give some boxes of books! He arranged a vehicle & we filled it up with enough boxes to cater to 2 schools, one of them with a kindergarten section.
As we drove past Nausori along a mostly sealed road, our dentist friend Dr Penioni told us how it used to just be a village path when he was a child. Going to school & back would involve a long walk, plus swimming across the Rewa river! This is one of Fiji’s main rivers & so it would involve the children taking off most of their clothes & putting them in a plastic bag, along with schoolbooks, to be carried on their heads as they swam across! Thankfully, things are a little easier for today’s children at Burebasaga District School.
It was a really fun distribution for everyone & we’re grateful to John for getting some good film footage of the event! Since there’s quite a lot of good photos, we’ll post some here & then a few more in our next post in 2 weeks…..
